Dripht - "Global Warning" Review

Review by Mike Bugeja - www.lib66.tk & The Malta Independent (20/7/2005)

The opening riff of Rockin' To Resist, the current single off Dripht's brand new 5-track EP, Global Warning, immediately spells out the band's affection for the late, great Joe Strummer and the spirit of the 80s punk ethic. Although it is a trait that has always been rooted deep inside Dripht's music, it has probably never been flaunted so openly. Balancing out the punk factor, Dripht's decision to cover The Rifffs' legendary Dance Music For Depression is a welcome choice. Their version is based on the original demo of the song, and brings out the song's Ska factor even more strongly than the more upbeat and streamlined original single version!

Guy On TV lies somewhere in between the first two tracks in terms of inspiration, oozing as much Clash as it does Specials, and in the process capturing Dripht's accomplished sound perfectly. The remaining two tracks, Old Times Gone Astray and Ecoloclast, reflect a more contemporary effervescence on the band's part. Here, the guitarwork and melodies in particular give the songs an edge that wouldn't be out of place alongside the current crop of Britrock contenders. Dripht's debut was promising - Global Warning is a great leap forward!
