Dripht - "Global Warning EP"

Furious drumming, jerky guitar and frontman Nick Morales belts out ‘Funky beats gets us moving’ and thus the listener is introduced into Dripht’s second release. Since 2004’s Mark Barnsley EP Dripht have gained a new member and have been gigging their arses off, and it shows. The new EP is more confident and the tunes are more in your face. One thing I notice with Dripht is that they tend to place their most

fun tune as their opener, and ‘Rockin’ to Resist’ is no exception. Its designed to get a dancefloor moving and judging by its live appearance it does its job well. Its a good introduction, but as the EP progresses the songs become better, the highlight being ‘Old Times Gone Astray’ which reminds me of a long lost Britpop anthem. Even the lyrics have an observational tone about them: ‘I am walking down this narrow road/But the only difference! This place is old’ and has a great loud/quiet dynamic. Furthermore there is a great rumbling bass and a phased vocal. I love it and I’ve listened to it on repeat for quite a while.

Dripht know how to make people move. Closer ‘Ecoloclast’ and ‘Guy on TV’ have punchy choruses and this is what they excel at. Also the fact that they have an agenda, although I admit that sometimes political lyrics make me feel awkward. It provides a nice contrast to the fun quality of the music.

However there are blips, and that is the inclusion of a cover of The Riffs ‘Dance Music for Depression’. Its pretty inconsequential and since Dripht are capable of writing their own material this track simply sticks out. I think that Dripht should stick to doing their own stuff. Other than that this EP is a massive step and the group has proved that they can go further.
